Abstract

The bovine papillomavirus (BPV) infects the skin and mucosa of the affected animals, being the causal agent of bovine papillomatosis, a condition related to the emergence of benign lesions that may undergo malignant transformation in a process that is directly linked to the expression of viral oncoproteins. Particularly, BPVs types -1 and -2 cause bovine fibropapillomas, in addition to equine sarcoid. Both types are also associated with the onset of chronic enzootic hematuria, which is considered as a study model for the interaction virus/immunosuppressants environmental cofactors. BPV is widespread worldwide, being related to diseases of high economic impact, affecting the dairy production chain as well as the meat and leather ones. It is estimated that at least 30% of the Brazilian herd shows clinical signs caused by BPV infection, being the bovine papillomatosis a highly neglected disease. Despite the amount of affected animals among the national herd requires the development of vaccines aiming the virus control, there is not the availability of effective biopharmaceuticals products that could fight viral infection and its consequences, including both prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines. Thus, the development of second generation vaccines, based on recombinant DNA technology, could allow the control of virus infection, bringing extensive benefits to livestock sector. (AU)
