Transcriptome profile analysis during photoperiodic induction in sugarcane by RNA-seq

Abstract

The Brazilian sugarcane breeding programs has positively impacted the sugarcane industry by the development of productive cultivares adapted to different edaphoclimatic conditions of the country. Flowering is one of the relevant factors for sugarcane. Despite its importance, the knowledge of the genes involved during the photoperiodic induction in sugarcane is still scarce, and the investigation of differentially expressed genes under controlled photoperiodic conditions, in fact, still need to be explored. This project aims to study the transcriptome of a sugarcane cultivar during flowering induction via RNA-seq (RNA-sequencing) technique to identify differentially expressed genes. Also the data will be mined to explore the development of molecular markers (SSRs and SNPs). For this, a sugarcane cultivar will be submitted to photoperiod treatments of flowering induction and non-induction (control) in an automated Photoperiod facility in a period comprising the beginning of induction until flowering. The sampling time point corresponding to the change of the vegetative to reproductive stage will be selected to be used for the RNA-seq analysis. We emphasize that, to our knowledge, to date, the transcriptome of sugarcane during flowering induction, under controlled photoperiod conditions has not yet been investigated, characterizing the proposal as of great potential to unravel important sugarcane flowering genes and hence contribute for the agricultural bio-economy of the country.
