Abstract

This project brings together the Instituto Butantan's Laboratory of Parasitology and Museum of Public Health with Emory University's Department of Environmental Sciences and Program in Portuguese to examine the past and present of mosquito and other insect-borne infections in São Paulo. Such a study is particularly relevant to scholars at Emory University because of its leading position in Public Health, in Brazilian Studies, and because the city of Atlanta, like São Paulo, has undergone an intense process of urbanization that includes a large percentage of descendants of African slaves, immigrants (especially from Asia and the Middle East) and migrants from the northeast (New England in the US and from Bahia and Ceará in Brazil).A FAPESP Sprint grant unites areal of knowledge that are often considered disparate including anthropology, genetics, cultural studies, ecology and epidemiology/public health. These approaches are critical to the work of principal investigators Kitron (currently holding an interdisciplinary Faculty Fellowship for a study of mosquitos and migration in São Paulo) and Suesdek (hold of FAPESP active research grant on the genetic function of genes of mosquitoes vectors of pathogens). The FAPESP Sprint grant lead to outcomes that will enrich the public knowledge on candidate genes to transgenic mosquitoes, analyze the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases within a historical-epidemiological and spatial-temporal context, and develop new methods of presenting information to a non-academic public.
