Abstract

The ICMC research activities result in annual publications in specialized journals (527 in total and only 184 periodicals) and the creation of products that generate patent filings, with national and international impact and solving social problems. There are 32 research groups, whose projects have received support from national and international funding agencies. The results of these studies have often been awarded in national and international events. Noteworthy is the participation of reserchers in large projects, such as the participation and coordination of thematic research networks such as the National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs), the Centers for Research Support (NAPs) and the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (CEPID). The 3rd floor of the Library is a unique space, with total area of 554.25 m2, environments for study, rooms equipped for seminars and trainings. It is widely used for qualifying exams and theses/ dissertations, studies and individual and group meetings. The 3rd floor includes a journals library, which consists of a retrospective collection with over 100,000 issues, including full titles dating from the early nineteenth century, such as the Journal of L'Ecole Polytechnique, Crelle's Journal and Journal de Mathématiques pures et appliquées. This collection is largely consulted by local researchers and also by visitors from other universities. Formatting and flexibility of the area allowed by the number of tables, study rooms and availability of materials (white boards, computers, multimedia projectors and video conferencing equipment) associated with the proximity of the extensive collection of available journals on site, makes this floor one distinctive environment in support of ICMC research. Enables even face meetings and remote between researchers and visitors who remain here due to events or projects with ICMC researchers. From a thermal monitoring carried out this 3rd. floor with a finding of high temperature, there was the air conditioning the environment of the operating sector, while other areas are still suffering the consequences of high temperature. Importantly, the ICMC Library serves, along with the new Service and Research Building and Research Laboratories Building, the demand for the use of space for graduate students, which increased considerably and has extended the excessive heat claims on site. Another important consideration regarding the high temperature is the impact on the conservation of this collection and will hardly be replaced by any digital resource, such as rare books and journals complete collections. In addition to the high temperature is harmful to these materials, moisture, dirt and the entry of birds in the environment, made possible through the doors and windows must remain open also potentiate the damage. Thus, these materials must be cleaned more frequently, which reduces its lifetime and accelerates its deterioration. Whereas the frequency of postgraduate students has been growing in the library spaces, reaching over half of the students present in most of the times; considering the essential area of study and research available to the local community and visitors, as well as the influence of thermal comfort in concentration and quality of the work of the users; and considering the responsibility of the institution on the custody and preservation of bibliographic heritage that makes available to the scientific community, justified the climate of the area in order to adapt the space to better use by the community and minimize damage to existing material.
