Abstract

The present proposal considers two main objectives. The first one consists of the experimental determination of the premixed laminar flame velocity of anhydrous ethanol - air mixtures at room temperature, atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressures, and at different equivalence ratios, including values near the flammability limits. There are no published articles which present data on premixed laminar flame velocity for sub-atmospheric pressures, or near the upper flammability limit. These novel experiments will be performed at 101.3, 80, 60, 40 and 20 kPa.The second objective is to determine whether perforated plate or parallel plate flame arresters can be used as in-line deflagration arrester for room temperature and different pressure conditions. In order to test the flame arresters, the European Norm (BS EN 12874:2001) protocol will be followed. The experiments will be performed at 101.3, 80, 60 and 40 kPa. The premixed laminar flame velocity is an important parameter for the characterization of the combustion of a combustible fuel-air mixture. In recent years, thanks to FAPESP's regular research project 2009/09738-7 and post doc project 2009/09008-9, flammability limits of ethanol in air at different pressures and temperatures were measured. The present proposal represents another step towards ethanol combustion characterization. Also, it is necessary to develop flame arresters capable of stopping deflagrations in pipes filled with an ethanol - air mixture. (AU)
