Abstract
Background: Approximately half of the adult population suffers from chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia and low back pain. These conditions have a high prevalence and a good response to treatment with physical exercise, being the modified Pilates method a good treatment option for these patients. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of modified Pilates exercises compared to aerobic exercise in the treatment of patients with fibromyalgia and elderly with chronic non-specific low back pain. Methods: This project contains two individual studies, with the assessments conducted by a blinded assessor at baseline, eight weeks and six months after randomization: Study 1) 98 patients with fibromyalgia will be included and the assessed outcomes will be fibromyalgia impact, pain intensity, kinesiophobia, quality of life and specific disability; and Study 2) 74 elderly patients with chronic non-specific low back pain will be included and the assessed outcomes will be pain intensity, general and specific disability, global impression of recovery, dynamic balance, strength of hip muscles and pressure pain threshold. In both studies, participants will be randomly divided into Aerobic Group (aerobic exercises performed on mats and/or stationary bike) and Pilates Group. Patients will be treated twice a week for eight weeks. Expected results: It is expected that exercises of the Pilates method will be as effective as aerobic exercise, which is already considered an effective intervention for the clinical condition of these patients. Thus, the results of this study will contribute to more accurate estimates of the therapeutic effects of exercises based on the Pilates method. (AU)
