Search for new physics at the CMS experiment of the Large Hadron Collider


In this project, I present a High-Energy Physics research proposal in the CMS experiment of the Large Hadron Collider. The experiment has built and deployed a multipurpose detector capable of registering the proton-proton collisions delivered by the accelerator, with excellent particle reconstruction and identification capabilities and an acquisition rate of up to 1000 interactions per second. My goal is to use the data taken in the experiment to perform searches for Physics Beyond the Standard Model; according to the experiment's schedule, one expects the acquisition of a dataset equivalent to 100/fb of p--p collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13~TeV until 2019, enough to study a large part of the New Physics models proposed until now. I plan to focus on two approaches: a search for new resonances in the two massive bosons channel (pp -> X -> VV, with V = W,Z,H); and a search for the direct production of particles that may account for the so called Dark Matter (pp -> DM + ...), a new kind of matter not described by the Standard Model. Furthermore, I present plans to work on the experimental upgrades, particularly on the Level-1 and High Level Trigger systems, responsible for setting in motion the data acquisition system. (AU)
