Abstract
Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have a high prevalence of hypertension, which contributes to their high cardiovascular risk. Meta-analysis studies have shown that isometric handgrip training (IHT) reduces clinical blood pressure in hypertensive individuals, however, whether similar effects are observed in PAD patients that presents important cardiovascular dysfunction and the possible mechanisms is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the effects of IHT on blood pressure, endothelial function and cardiac autonomic modulation in patients with PAD. In this clinical trial, 90 patients will be randomly allocated into two groups: IHT and control (CG). The IHT will conduct the unilateral handgrip training three days per week (four sets of two minutes, with 30% of maximum voluntary contraction with an interval of four minute between sets). The GC will conduct a sham training, with a physical therapy compression ball, in three sessions per week. All patients, in both groups, will be encouraged to increase the level of activity, as they are usually geared for medical consultation. At baseline, during (fifth week) and after (eighth week) intervention period brachial and central blood pressure, endothelial function, and cardiac autonomic modulation will be obtained. Statistical analysis will be held with two-way ANOVA for repeated measures with the group (IHT and GC) and time (pre, during and post-intervention) as factors, and will be accepted as significant value of P<0.05.
