Abstract

The main objective of this project, which will feature the collaboration of researchers from the University of Salamanca, Spain, is to synthesize and characterize multifunctional solid materials based on titanium and ironporphyrins with technological and environmental properties. The materials will be prepared from environmentally available arrays with low toxicity or no toxicity such as natural clays (from Brazil or Spain) and frustule silicate matrix of diatomaceous earth, affording materials that should act as effective catalysts in advanced oxidation reactions. Initially, clays and diatomaceous earth will be functionalized with organic groups by the sol-gel process. Then, second-generation ironporphyrins will be incorporated into these matrixes, to obtain a multifunctional catalyst for application in different reactions. The innovative nature of this project will be the use of diatoms (or diatomaceous earth) as Silicon source. After functionalization of the free silanol groups of the matrixes with organic groups by the sol-gel process and immobilization of second-generation ironporphyrins or titanium alkoxides on the solids, the materials will be directly used to treat wastewaters contaminated with emerging organic pollutants, especially ibuprofen and acetyl salicylic acid, and to catalyze the oxidation of cyclohexane and ketone (Baeyer Villiger reaction). It is intended, through this Sprint 2016, have great advances on these goals. (AU)
