Abstract

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment modality that have been showing to be promising in many health sciences, such as dentistry and medicine, being applied at microorganisms inactivation and tumor treatment. Due to its low cost, methylene blue (MB), which is a phenothiazine photosensitizer (PS), it has been extensively known in Brazil. Other phenothiazines, such as Azure A, Azure B and Dimethylmethylene blue, can be interesting PSs due to their structure similar to MB. Literature regarding MB effectivity are conflicting. Since MB presents peculiar physico-chemical properties. Therefore, the identification of the relationships between aggregation, action mechanism and effectivity against microorganisms, as well as the establishment of new media and formulas that can favor the most effective mechanism, is essential. This work includes solution, Candida albicans planktonic culture and biofilms studies to evaluate the MB aggregation effect on the effectivity of antimicrobial PDT, with the aim to stablish the most effective photochemical mechanism, besides evaluating the other phenothiazines action.
