Abstract

Proteglycans are macromecules composed by a specific core protein to witch linear chains of heteropolysaccharides, the glycosaminoglycans, are covalently linked. The proteglycans participate in many functions as angiogenesis, cellular differentiation and proliferation, adhesion, apoptosis, invasion and metastasis. MicroRNAs, small non-coding RNAs with 19 to 25 nucleotides, play critical roles in cellular regulation and also in the microenvironment, which include regulation over proteoglycans. Their expression patterns are associated with cancer development and progression. It is rising the study of microRNAs related to carcinogenesis, tumors progression and maily in the prognosis of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. For this cancer, tumor thickness, a clinical evidence of the adjacent stroma invasion by the tumor, is a well established and an independent factor of worse prognosis, although the molecular pathways of this process are still poorly understood. In this scenario, the purposes of the present project are to evaluate the role of proteoglycans and microRNAs in the process of tumor invasion, and also to correlate their expression with demographic, histopathological and immunohistochemistry data and the prognosis of patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma.
