Abstract

The introduction of vitreoretinal surgery, pars plana vitrectomy, enabled the treatment of major diseases of the retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular hole or retinal detachment. Current vitreous substitutes routinely used such as balanced salt solution, air, octalfluoropropane gas or silicone oil have their own advantages and limitations. The use of the hydrogel as vitreous substitute enable a breakthrough in surgical technique and consequent improvement of surgical outcomes. (AU)
