Evaluation of new technologies for urine-based HPV detection - extension of the "Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation" research project

Abstract

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can cause benign and malignant proliferative disorders, mainly in the cervix. Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent malignant proliferative disorder in women, with 500 thousand new cases by year and more than 250 thousand deaths worldwide. In Brazil, it was estimate 16240 new cases for 2016. Cervical cancer is a preventable malignant disorder through the detection of precursor lesions by the cytopathology test. However, there are women that do not participate of the screening program. In Brazil approximately 8 millions of Papanicolaou tests were made in 2012 suggesting the coverage of 48%. Of course, the unscreened women are the main source of new cervical cancer cases. Projects that overcome the barriers to their access to the cervical cancer screening, as lack of access to healthcare screening services, a paucity of physicians to perform cytopathology tests and pathologists to interpret them, are necessary. The overcoming can be achieved by the use of of tests that could be home made. Therefore this study aims to develop a new system for cervical cancer screening that detects the E6 oncoprotein in urine, and allows the woman to made it at home. (AU)
