Brain cortical activity during human locomotion: Influence of aging, Parkinson's disease and acute physical exercise

Abstract

Background: Recent studies suggest that the human cerebral cortex is more active during walking than previously reported in the literature. The main evidences of the involvement of the cerebral cortex in human locomotion come from studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging. These studies have an important limitation: the participants were not, in fact, walking during the recording of brain cortical activity. Therefore, a more ecological approach is required in order to confirm the findings from neuroimaging studies. It means to record brain cortical activity during real-world walking tasks. The mobile electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) devices, recently made available on the market, allow the registration of the cerebral cortex activity during real-world walking tasks. Objectives: In this context, the objective of the current research proposal is to investigate the effects of aging (Study #1), Parkinson's disease (PD; Study #1) and acute physical exercise (Study #2) on the activity of the cerebral cortex during real-world walking tasks. Studies: The current proposal involves two innovative research projects with international collaboration. In short, measures of the activity of the cerebral cortex and motor behavior will be recorded while young adults, healthy older adults and patients with PD perform real-world walking tasks. The Study #1 will investigate the effects of aging and PD on the activity of the cerebral cortex during locomotion. The Study #2, a randomized controlled trial, will investigate the acute effect of exercise on the activity of the cerebral cortex during locomotion in patients with PD. (AU)
