Non-classic Precipitation of Alpha Phase in Ti-Nb-Fe and Ti-Nb-Fe-Sn Alloys

Abstract

Mechanical behavior of metastable beta-type titanium alloys can be manipulated by applying solution heat treatments of beta phase, followed by alpha phase precipitation. While beta phase is soft, alpha phase exhibits harder. Usually, it is assumed that the alpha phase nucleation in the beta phase matrix occurs heterogeneously and assisted by omega phase, which acts as nucleation substrate. The aim of this research project is to evaluate microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Ti-Nb-Fe and Ti-Nb-Fe-Sn alloys submitted to aging heat treatment to verify whether alpha phase can be nucleated homogeneously and assisted by pseudo-spinodal decomposition. Ti-Nb-Fe and Ti-Nb-Fe-Sn alloys will be prepared by arc melting, subjected to solution heat treatment followed by plastic deformation and finally, applying aging heat treatments. Samples will be characterized by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, elastic modulus measurements, Vickers hardness and tensile tests. The results to be obtained will allow verifying the possibility of obtaining the pseudo-spinodal decomposition in Nb-based titanium alloys. (AU)
