Abstract

The MAX phases constitute a group of compounds that crystallize with Cr2AlC prototype. The MAX phases have typical hexagonal structures with space group P63/mmc. Among those materials crystallizing as a Cr2AlC prototype structure, the Ti3SiC2 phase has been widely investigated with potential application in aerospace components. This is due to combine some properties of both metals and ceramics, such as good electrical and thermal conductivities, machinability, thermal shock resistance, oxidation and corrosion resistance. The manufacturing of these phases has been extensively studied. Although it is an expensive technique, the hot pressing method predominantly induces to a single phase. The microwave heating has shown its applicability on many different materials. Shorter sintering times and better properties at the same sintering temperatures as in conventional sintering have been reported. Since the MAX phase properties are highly dependent of method, this work is focused on the microwave heating in order to prepare the MAX compounds. The Ti3SiC2, Ti2AlN, Ti2AlC, Ti2SnC, Ti3AlC2 and Ti3SnC2 compounds will be prepared by microwave heating. X-ray diffraction including Rietveld method, microstructural observation (SEM analysis) and mechanical properties (e.g. compressive strength and hardness) will be carried out in order to determine the efficiency of microwave heating on these proposed MAX phases.
