Influence of pre treatment of biomass in supercritical CO2 extraction: conservation of high asset value added and process cost reduction

Abstract

The turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and ginger (Zingiberofficinale) have bioproducts that are of great industrial interest. The major compounds found in turmeric are curcuminoids (curcumin and demethoxycurcumin) and volatile oil (ketone and turtumerones and sesquiterpenes); and, on ginger, volatile oil (monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes) and pungent compounds in larger quantities such as gingerols and shogaols. The Extraction by Supercritical Fluid (EFS) using CO2 (EFS-CO2) allows obtaining these compounds in the form of crude extracts, bioactive fractions and oleoresin with complete nutrition and food safety and also functions as a step of pretreatment of waste biomasses . Subsequent these rich waste biomasses cellulose and starch improved by pretreatment (eg, as passed by extraction of bioproducts EFS-CO2 and cosolvent ethanol) can be hydrolysed with subcritical water (SCW) and supercritical in oligosaccharides and sugars withdifferentiated sensory characteristics. For the above information, in this study, the influence of pre-treatment in the crude and fractionated extracts extraction kinetics will be studied to obtain bioproducts with high purity and viable production costs by EFS-CO2, thus avoiding steps additional purification / fractionation. For full use of biomass also aims to evaluate the potential conversion of dearomatized and depigmented residual biomass (rich in starch and cellulose) into lactic acid via catalytic hydrolysis SCW. Will be studied in parallel the potential conversion of starches and cellulose into sugars by combining the SCW and supercritical water technologies in a continuous flow system and semi-continuous flow. It will also be performed the conversion of hydrolysates via fermentative route with the Institute for Technological Research - IPT (contract services).Several mathematical models are used to determine the economic viability of each product and the overall holistic process (ie, integration of EFS-CO2 processes, asc, and fermentative supercritical water). To overcome the challenges were established partnership with the Lasefi / Unicamp, under the coordination of Dr. Maria Angela de Almeida Meireles, and other PhD researchers (engineers) with expertise in the area (biomass conversion by supercritical extraction and integration processes involving supercritical technologies).
