SmartPill - monitoring and promotion solution for adherence to smart contraceptive devices, mobile application and online system

Abstract

This project aims to develop a low-cost solution to help women who use oral contraceptives (contraceptives) adhere to treatment effectively, helping them to take their pills at the right time and informing them in real time what to do if they forget of ingesting one or more tablets. This reduces the rate of unplanned pregnancies, since about 40% of this type of gestation is of women who were making use of oral contraceptive. For this, an application and a device are being produced whose carton of the medicament is conditioned. The system works in a simple way, the patient inserts the carton in the device and informs in the application the ID of the same and the parameters of use of its medicine, if it takes all the pills of the card, the schedule that makes daily use of the tablets, or not the cards and the day that will start your next card. After that, just highlight the medicine by clicking on the button extractor of the device at the moment that the same signal through a led light that is time to take the medicine or through the alarm of the app. When doing this, the device identifies through an optical sensor that the tablet has been removed and sends the signal via sigfox to our server. With the data compiled, the information is then treated and arrives at the user's application in a few seconds so that she knows how much she is following the treatment correctly. This project was one of those selected by the Vai Tec Program of the São Paulo City Hall, which financed the successful development of proof of concept of functional prototype requirements, as detailed in the exemption justification for Phase I. The technological challenges in this new project of research concern the usability of the device and application so that the patients see in the value proposition a solution that helps them make better use of their medicine. For this, several studies and tests were carried out, both within the pharmaceutical industry and in women who use contraceptives. Currently, the project needs new resources to meet its final objective due to the change in its scope, mainly due to the type of technology being developed to be very different from the one initially proposed for FAPESP.
