Abstract

During the last century the global sea level raised 1.7 mm/yr with a sea level rise up 3 mm/yr during the last decades (Bindoff et al., 2007). Recent studies indicate an accelerated sea level rise between 1.8 and 2.4 mm/yr and an increase of the sea surface temperaturebetween 1 and 3°C by the end of this century (Church et al., 2013). Mangroves occur on the transition land/sea and along low latitudes(Alongi, 2008). Changes in the spatial mangrove distribution may be caused by sea level changes (Cohen and Lara, 2003a; Gornitz, 1991)and/or by changes inair/water temperature (Soares et al., 2012). Considering C-14 and Pb-210 dates, sedimentary features, pollen, isotopic data and elemental C and N preserved on stratigraphic sequences sampled from mangroves along the littoral of Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia e Santa Catarina, and the dendrochronology and dendroecology of dominant arboreal species, this project intend to evaluate the modern implantation and the mangrove dynamics according to climate and sea level changes in a secular and millennium time scale, in order to estimate how the future global changes may affect this ecosystem.
