The technological development of sugar and alcohol industries indicates the utilization of bagasse and straw produced at short and medium term. Improvements in energy cogeneration, fermentation and bioproducts purifications systems are more viable and promising alternatives to increase the ethanol production. Currently, the sugarcane bagasse has been used in generating energy; however, the inclusion of straw in this production chain is presented as an option for raw material that could result in an additional gain in the production of energy. This utilization of lignocellulosic biomass to production of bioproducts such as cellulosic ethanol and furfural will definitely increase the portfolio in this sector. Although all the advances already achieved, there are enormous challenges and improvements that should be carried out throughout its production chain. In view of these considerations, the main goal of this project is to include straw along with bagasse as a raw material for energy cogeneration and bioproducts production as furfural with a technical, economical and environmentally evaluation, since these processes are connected to the current concept of biorefinery. With the development of this project will be generated two scenarios for complete use of the biomass (energy and furfural production), optimizing the different operational parameters that influence productivity. In addition, it will possible to evaluate the environmental impact and the economic viability of the two scenarios proposed. It is highlighted that the development of this project intends to insert a new research line in the Biochemistry and Chemistry Technology Department of IQ-UNESP- Araraquara, for expansion of studies of integral utilization of lignocellulosic biomass using the biorefinery concept.
