Abstract

Nitrogen is one of the most important contaminants found in sewage and its removal has been widely discussed in recent years. Many researchers have investigated about the anammox process (ANaerobic AMMonium-OXidizing) which is a promising alternative for the biological removal of nitrogen from industrial and domestic effluents. Studies about trickling filters technology with polyurethane sponge as support media showed that the biomass could have a high attachment degree, which is ideal for slower growth microorganism such as anammox bacteria. However, most studies about this process are carried out in sequencing batch reactors and they are fed with synthetic effluent, mainly with high concentration of nitrogen and without the presence of organic material. Thus, there is a lack of investigation about the nitrogen removal involving the anammox process in trickling filters, especially considering domestic wastewater effluent. The aim of this project is to study these filters, operated in lab scale, for a post - treatment of anaerobic wastewater in order to achieve nitrogen removal, mainly via anammox process. The research will be developed in 24 months and divided into four stages: (i) stabilization of anammox bacteria activity; (ii) Evaluation of anaerobic effluent influence in this activity; and (iii) Evaluation of reactor performance when fed with only anaerobic effluent. In addition it will be obtained guidelines for design parameters aiming the technology transfer to a pilot scale. (AU)
