Abstract

The Fermilab neutrino program search answers to some fundamental questions in physics such as the neutrino mass hierarchy, CP violation in the leptonic sector, and the possible existence of a fourth neutrino flavor. The detection technique chosen is the use of time projection chambers made of large liquid argon volumes. In addition to this system, argon scintillation light will be collected and used for timing and calorimetry resolution. For this, a new device for trapping light, the ARAPUCA, is expected to improve by an order of 10 the photon collection efficiency compared to the initially considered method for the experiments, based on the use of light guides (acrylic bars). This project is dedicated to the complete characterization of the ARAPUCA, still under testing phase, and of the acquisition electronics for the photon detection system of the SBND and DUNE experiments via Monte Carlo simulations. This will allow for robustness in predictions made using simulations for decision making processes related to the experiment's design, as well as for the development of reconstruction algorithms, through the implementation of a module in the software platform adopted by these collaborations.
