Abstract

The Minispec LF50 (compact magnetic resonance device), manufactured by Bruker, allows the analysis of the body composition of mice up to 60 grams (therefore it is not compatible with rats) using an MRI method, but without generating images. The data provided by the equipment refers to the amount of fat, lean mass and body water in the analyzed animal, in relation to its body weight. Analysis is rapid (30 seconds) and the animal remains semi-immobilized at that time by an acrylic container. A trained user can scan a mouse every 2 minutes. No anesthesia or any other type of sedation is required during this analysis, allowing longitudinal follow-up with minimal stress. (AU)
