Assessment of hazards trees in urban areas by development of software

Abstract

The urban forestry is an important factor to improving the quality of life of urban dwellers. The trees help to reduce the "heat island" by filter air pollutants, decrease the intensity of noise, minimize the impact of water rain, enhance the landscape, and provide shelter and food for wildlife. However, the urban forestry without inspection and management can be a damage for the community. Many times, it is possible falling trees and their branches that result in damages of property, power and communication interruptions, and interference in traffic and even cause accidents with people from various proportions. The health status (presence of pests and diseases) of the trees, the incompatibility of individual trees in the urban and / or decrepitude stage of these trees, because of their age or the occurrence of natural phenomena such as heavy rain and strong winds, could be the main reasons of hazard situations related to falling trees. In this context, to prevent and remedy problems resulting from falling trees, the Propark Paisagismo e Ambiente Ltda. intends to conduct studies and research in the field of urban forestry, with the scientific support of researchers from the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (ESALQ-USP, Piracicaba) and the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). There are many scientific works with great difficulty in making a decision on the recommendations for the management and the suppression of individual trees inserted into the urban area. When public opinion is unfavorable to their removal because the welfare of the population, this difficulty becomes greater. The Propark would like develop a system with national technology, perfectly adapted to the urban conditions, to determine and quantify possible risks of falling trees, with speed, security, efficiency and minimizing subjectivity in the evaluation process of the risk of falling of individual trees. The software will be based on technical and scientific parameters, combining the methodology diagnostic risk of falling trees, according to the Visual Tree Assessment System (VTA), adapted to Brazilian conditions, with digital technology, using a model similar to the model format spiral in interactive stages with the analysis and object-oriented programming. We strong believe that this Project could be an important way to help the decision of management of individual trees planted along the public roads, public parks and green areas, minimizing property damage, economic losses and contributing significantly to improving the welfare and especially the safety of the urban population.
