Abstract

In recent decades, the companion animals (pets) have occupied a relevant position in society, notably the close relationship established with their owners. Following this trend, the world veterinary pharmaceutical market has experienced a vigorous and rapid development scenario, stimulated by the increase in demand for specialized medicines. This scenario has guided the veterinary pharmaceutical industry to develop new drug applications, however, most of them focus on adapting human formulations for veterinary use, such as analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs. However, much of the human treatments don't answer properly and effectively in pets and may be toxic and non responsive. This fact highlights the need for the development of new drugs targeted to the different animal species, as dogs. The search for new drugs from biodiversity has been increasingly widespread throughout the world as a strategy for development of new drugs. In this context, previous studies conducted by Byos identified and ratified the analgesic and anti-inflammatory potential of a species of fern native to Atlantic forest, with very low toxicity in vitro and in vivo, demonstrating its potential for the development of a new phytomedicine. In this way, the present project aims to research and develop an analgesic and anti-inflammatory veterinary medicine from natural origin, clinically effective in relief and treatment of pain and inflammation in dogs.
