A qualitative study of fetal death and neonatal mortality in Santos City- SP Brazil

Abstract

In the end of 1980, the neonatal mortality turned out to be the main component in infant mortality, representing between 60% and 70% of infant mortality in all Brazilian regions. In Santos city, infant mortality rates have been stagnated between 14 to 15 per 1000 births, following the region of Baixada Santista that has the highest rate in the state of São Paulo. In this research will be analyzed death certificates of fetal and neonatal deaths that occurred during 2015 and 2016, as well as speeches of women that have gone through this experience in Zona Noroeste, trying to understand in a qualitative study their life stories and the health care they were given. The audio-taped individual interviews will be conducted by the researcher and the transcription and thematic content analysis will be the main aspects of the qualitative data. This research aims to collect and analyze the aspects related to the woman as a participant agent in family and in community as her life bases, based on gender issues in family and community lives, leading to an improvement of the understanding of the fetal death etiology and helping identify promising new interventions to reduce social disparities in neonatal mortality, improving women's and children's lives.
