Abstract

Introduction: HTLV-1 was described in 1980, and has been mainly related to the causative agent of ATL and HAM / TSP, in addition to other inflammatory diseases. It is estimated that 15 to 25 million people worldwide are infected with HTLV-1. However, most of them remain asymptomatic. Immune and genetic factors of the host are related to the development of HAM/TSP, but there are no studies that evaluate the influence of these aspects and the association with the development of myelopathy. Objective: To analyze whether there is an association between some genetic polymorphisms related to the immune response in patients infected with HTLV-1 with HAM / TSP. Material and Methods: The volunteers will be recruited from the HTLV outpatient clinic of the "Emílio Ribas" Institute of Infectious Diseases (IIER). A total of 700 volunteers will be recruited for this study, and divided into three groups (200 asymptomatic, 200 HAM / TSP, 100 minor symptoms and 200 non-HTLV-1 infected relatives). Genetic polymorphism assays, HTLV-1 proviral load and T cell lymphoproliferation will be performed on all samples collected. The data will be treated using descriptive, univariate and multivariate statistics will be done. Conclusion: These data may contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis for the development of HAM / TSP and its clinical management. (AU)
