Abstract

It has been estimated that worldwide more than 20 million people are infected by HTLV-1. In Brazil, there are approximately 2.5 million carriers of this virus, which places the country on the first position regarding the absolute number of infected individuals. HTLV-1 is associated with two main clinical diseases: i) adult T-cell (ATLL) leukemia / lymphoma; and ii) progressive myelopathy associated with HTLV-1 /tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Besides this infection is neglected and does not have vaccine, it does not have specific and effective treatment. Therefore, the objective of this project is to analyze 30,000 compounds by High Content Screening technology (HCS) that can identify novel therapeutic agents that may induce apoptosis and /or blocking the viral replication in HTLV-1 infected cells. This study will allow the discovery of new therapeutic options for HTLV-1 treatment. As a consequence, this study will create a support for further pharmaceutical investigations, which it will provide options for treatment and improve the life quality of patients with HTLV-1- induced clinical diseases.
