Abstract

This study aims to validate the Burns Specific Pain Anxiety Scale BSPAS and the Impact of Event Scale IES for Portuguese; evaluate the internal consistency of these scales, applying them to a sample of Brazilian burns victims; evaluate construct validity (convergent and divergent validity) and criterion validity (predictive validity) of the BSPAS VP in relation to the assessment of pain and anxiety, establishing correlations with the State Anxiety Inventory and the Visual Analogue Pain Scale; and evaluate construct (convergent and divergent validity) and criterion validity (predictive validity) of the IES VP, in relation to the evaluation of the impact exercised by the event, establishing correlations with Rosenbergs Self-Esteem Scale, Becks Depression Inventory and the SF-36. The sample will include 150 adult patients who are hospitalized at the Burns Unit of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School Clinical Hospital. The study includes the following steps: 1. obtaining the patients signed consent and collecting sociodemographic data; 2. following pain signs during seven days, by means of the Visual Analogue Pain Scale, applied at three different moments: immediately before cleansing and wound dressing; immediately after cleansing and wound dressing; and at 20 h; 3. After the first and up to the second week of hospitalization, we will apply the BSPAS VP, the IES VP and State Anxiety Inventory; 4. the IES VP, Rosenbergs Self-Esteem Scale, Becks Depression Inventory and the SF-36 will be applied between the 10th and 12th month and between the 16th and 18th month after the burn. We will use Pearsons product-moment correlation test, Cronbachs Alpha and Pearsons correlation test to evaluate the psychometric properties of the BSPAS-VP and IES-VP. (AU)
