Abstract

Several analytical methods are based on procedures of extraction and preconcentration, many of them utilizing toxic solvents to the environment. The present project is focused on the development of greener analytical procedures exploiting cloud-point extraction and concentration of metal ions in order to increase sensitivity, improve selectivity and replace toxic solvents. Some original proposals will be also evaluated such as extraction and measurement with a single surfactant drop and coupling the extraction to flow based systems with in-line neutralizing reactions. These reactions will be exploited as heating source as well as for increasing the salt concentration to induce the cloud point generation. Several materials will be evaluated for retention of the surfactant-rich phase, the critical step for coupling the cloud-point process in flow systems. The procedures will be applied to the determination of Cu, Fe and Ni in digests of plant materials after formation of complexes with 1,2-thiazolylazo-2-naphthol and extraction with Triton X-114.
