Abstract

In the last decades was possible to observe the great development achieved in the field of synthesis of silicon-based materials. The high surface area of these materials, as in the case of silica MCM-41, is an interesting characteristic from the viewpoint of application, since it can bring about an increase of efficiency either in catalysis, solid-phase extraction or in other procedures. The present work will be divided in three steps: 1°) The first step consists in the synthesis of the MCM-41-type mesoporous silica from the guider agent cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as well as its characterization through FTIR, SEM, 29Si NMR measurements, pores distribution and surface area measures. 2°) The second step comprises the modification of the material using silylant agent (3-chloropropyl)trimethoxysilane and, subsequently, with the ligand molecule 4-amino-2-mercaptopyrimidine. The surface modification of silica was also carried out through the POCl3 agent, followed by the addition of the ligand molecule. This second route will be studied and compared with the previous one, due to the possibility of closing the pores (~3.5 nm) when greater molecules are used. In this step the material prepared will be characterized through FTIR, 13C and 29Si NMR, surface area measurement, and elemental analysis. 3°) In the third step, the work will be turned to the studies related to the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II), in aqueous solutions, followed by the species quantification through Atomic Absorption Spectrometry using flame-mode (FAAS) or furnace-mode (GFAAS), if necessary. When the adsorption capacity of the material was established, it will be applied in the preconcentration of metallic species in natural water samples, using continuous flow system. The results obtained using the preconcentration system will be compared with those using certificated water (1643e) in order to validate the proposed method. This study involving the mesoporous silica will enable the development of a material with a good potential for applications to the metallic species extraction and will be able to guarantee a safer quantification of such species, since in the proposed system there will be a preconcentration step before species quantification through atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
