Effect of herbal medicines on peripheral nerve regeneration in rats submitted to experimental neurorrhaphy

Abstract

Peripheral nervous system (PNS) damage are commum. Despite the fact that PNS has regenerative capacity, in several situations the peripheral nerve regeneration can occours inadequadely, carring on functional damage.The catuama is an association of four hydroalcoholic extracts obtided from brazilians plants (Paullinia cupana, Trichilia catigua, Ptychopetalum olacoides e Zingiber officinale) with knowing neuprotective, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-depressant actions. The bilobalide is a Ginkgo biloba’s leaves extract component that have showed neuroprotective action in the central and PNS. This study intends to examine the catuama’s actions when given chronically by oral route to compare with bilobalide actions. Fifty rats divided on 5 groups of 10 animals each will be submmited to 10mm right sciatic nerve gap and silicone chambers neurorraphy with liquid collagen. Three groups will receive respectily 100, 200 e 400mg of catuama/ kg (PO) on the firstly 28 days of post-opperatory. The control and bilobalide group will receive only saline soluction (10 ml/kg PO) for 28 days after surgery. The bilobalide group is going to receive 200uM of bilobalide on their silicone chambers liquid collagen. The animals will be examine 8 weeks after surgery through electro-stimulation and quantitative and qualitative histological sections analysis.
