Abstract

Administration and postponement of medication are two of the most frequent activities in the routine of the nursing staff in an intensive care unit (ICU). The performance of such activities requires knowledge about specific subjects in pharmacology, including interactions among medications and their reactions. The proposed study aims to investigate incidence of drug interaction in an ICU, through analysis of time schedules planned by nurses for drug administration. It has been conducted from December 2005 to December 2006 in an ICU, specialized in heart diseases, located at Fortaleza city. The software Microsoft Excel® has been used to input data to specific software for analysis of drug interaction. Also, literature on the subject of drug interaction has been consulted. The study has been approved by ethical committee of the hospital. It must been emphasized that deeper understanding and knowledge about pharmacology by nursing staff is an important requisite to minimize, or ideally to prevent, accidental improper medication associations, increasing security of patients.
