Abstract

The purpose of this project is to research the barbarian theme manifestation in the following texts of the XIX and XX century Portuguese Literature: Mário de Carvalho’s novel, Um Deus Passeando Pela Brisa da Tarde (1994), Herberto Helder’s tale, Teorema (1963) and the narrative Eurico, o Presbítero (1844) by Alexandre Herculano. The chosen literary texts have in common, besides the peculiar historical elaboration, in which the presence of the barbarian element in the Portuguese past is evident, a relativization of the manicheist conception that considers civilization and barbarian as two contrarian concepts. Then, we will, through the fictitious historical perspective provided by the Literature, look for a free recognition of a “barbarian origin” to the Portuguese past, still prevalent in the interior of the civil constitution of Portuguese culture.
