Abstract

This Ph.D. project aims at developing a new approach for the design of controllers to damp electromechanical oscillations in power systems. Given that these controllers must be robust against variations it the operating point of the power system, the application of a robust control technique (based on the resolution of linear matrix inequalities) is proposed for the treatment of this problem. The proposed technique innovates with regard to other existing approaches (including the ones previously developed by the candidate advisor) in the sense that it allows the use of less restrictive auxiliary functions. This feature enables the proposed approach with a potential to provide less conservative and more efficient controllers than the already existing or proposed ones. The technique developed in this Ph.D. work is predicted to be tested for the design of controllers of a Power System Stabilizer type and supplementary controllers for Flexible AC Trasmission System devices, both frequently utilized to damp electromechanical oscillations in power systems.
