Abstract

The main target of this project is the analysis of the behavior of an Electrical Power System (EPS) during the transient period, and its focus are the phenomena related to small signal angle stability. The problems analyzed in this research are the damping control of low frquency electromechanical oscillations and the underfrequency load shedding. The main objectives of this research are the development of: a) design procedures yielding more efficient controllers to damp electromechanical oscillations, with the application of robust control techniques based on tools for solving optimization problems restricted by linear matrix inequalities; b) more reliable methodologies (with respect to the ones already available on the market) for the analysis of angle stability in EPS, based on the concepts of quadratic stability and polytopic modelling; c) optimization processes resulting in more efficient underfrequency load shedding plans, also using the tools of linear matrix inequalities. With respect to the first two objectives, the oscillation damping is carried out by controllers known as PSSs, which present well-known problems to provide acceptable performance when the EPS is subject to changes in its operating point. In a general manner, this project proposes the utilization of robust control techniques (based on the optimization restricted by linear matrix inequalities) to design controllers and evaluate the EPS stability, in a robust manner with respect to these variations in the operating conditions. Regarding the third objective, the determination of an underfrequency load shedding plan is a quite complicated problem, because it involves a large number of variables and possible scenarios, therefore presenting combinatorial characteristics. In this case, the project proposes (to expand the scope of the field of research of the proponent) an evaluation of the possibility to treat the problem of obtaining an adequate underfrequency load shedding plan using optimizations restricted by linear matrix inequalities. With respect to the specific results concerning scientific production, at least 1 publication in an international periodic is predicted during the development of the project. Moreover, at least 4 publications in proceedings of national and international events are predicted, together with the graduation of at least 3 master students, resulting in at least 1 Ph.D. research being developed at the time this project reaches its final...
