Abstract

Previous studies like Leiria (2000), Schwindt (2000), Bisol (2000, 2004, 2005), Toneli (2009), and others, have presented evidence for the existence of a prosodic domain in Brazilian Portuguese (PB) above the foot and below the phonological phrase, that is, the Prosodic Word domain, that would cover the morphological units. However, besides presenting evidence for this domain in BP, these studies do not refer specifically to: (i) the way this prosodic domain is constructed in the studied variety, especially with regard to compound words; (ii) the way the prosodic word deals with clitic words (words without lexical stress) related to its host; and (iii) which phonological characteristics define the prosodic word as the domain of phonological rules. This project, entitled "The prosodic word in Brazilian Portuguese", proposes a systematic study of the Prosodic Word domain in this variety of Portuguese.
