Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a musculoskeletal disorder of great study interest once it may generate great limitations and functional incapacities of the involved joints. The knee joint is the most commonly hindered among the involved joints, once this disorder is followed by quadriceps muscle weakness. Quadricepsweakness has been stipulated as the cause of frequent falls in OA patients along with selective atrophy of muscle fibers type II. However, unknown are the studies that correlate muscle weakness with possible morphological muscle findings along with functional alterations due to OA in early stages, such as grade I and II. The understanding of such factors and possible alterations would aid in an early and oriented intervention, reducing the disease progression and contribute to the development of a specific rehabilitation program. This study is justified due tothe disease great incidence in the world population and consequently its importance in Public Health. Therefore, the aim of this study is to correlate the morphological characteristics of the vastus lateralis muscle and the neuromuscular control (accelerationtime of the quadriceps muscle and the electromyographic signal integral of the vastuslateralis muscle) of grade I and II OA patients and also of healthy individuals. Thirty, ale volunteers will participate in this study. These volunteers will be divided into two groups: Control Group (CG), comprised of 15 healthy subjects, and the grade I and II knee Osteoarthritis Group (OG), comprised of 15 subjects. All volunteers will undergo a vastuslateralis muscle biopsy for a morphological study of this muscle. Also, an isokinetic dynamometer test (Biodex Multi-Joint System 3, USA) will be performed to assess the acceleration time and the Maximal Isometric Torque (MIT), the Maximal Concentric Isokinetic Torque (MCIT), and the Maximal Eccentric Isokinetic Torque (MEIT) of the quadriceps femoral muscle, simultaneously and synchronically to the electromyographic exam to verify the electrical activity of the vastus lateralis muscle. Adequate statistical tests will be utilized to compare the neuromuscular control and the MIT, MCIT, and MEIT between the groups, along with specific correlation tests to correlate the results of the vastus lateralismuscle biopsy analysis, along with the variables quadriceps acceleration time and electromyographic signal integral of the muscle vastus lateralis of both groups. The significance level considered will be 5% (alpha less than or equal to 0.05). (AU)
