Abstract

The present Research Project for Doctor’s Degree is aimed at analyzing the constitution of a school reading model made by the Collection of School Reading from National Publishing House Company (Coleção Leitura Escolar da Companhia Editora Nacional). It is consisted by the following books: “Ler Brincando”, “Espelho”, “Vida na Roça”, “Trabalho”, “Saudade”, “Campo e Cidade” and “Alegria” all written by Thales Castanho de Andrade. The materiality of the Collection will be studied for the analysis; documents and editorials related to the policies of book acquisition between the State and the publishing house; searching for two types of readers: the ones who read the book (s) and that can be characterized by reading/borrowing cards at “Biblioteca da Escola Normal de Piracicaba”, in official indications proposed in yearbooks, programs and educational periodicals, and those intended readers, found in the data analyses from the publishing house, from the author and from the books themselves; and the editorial market. The theoretical reference of this paper is centered, under the methodological viewpoint, in ideas developed by Roger Chartier in an approach identified as “cultural history”. According to Roger Chartier (1991), this methodology is focused in the comprehension, handling and studying of texts, printed in different ways, in their historical social context. In order to analyze the collection, we take into account Roger Chartier’s statement: It is necessary to link two perspectives: to study the text itself and the printed matter that support it. Therefore, it is tried to understand the text from the reading protocols and also to reconstitute the process by which the book obtains meaning considering the relations that are set among three poles: the text, the object that serves as support and the practice that takes it. This paper will help to understand which characteristics of the books constitute the Collection and the ways by which it institutes a model for school reading.
