Abstract

Considering that the Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) are produced by cochlear non-linear mechanisms, it is possible to understand these mechanisms studying the cochlear compressive characteristics. However, there is a large variability within normal-hearing individuals DPOAE responses caused by interferences of sound conduction (middle ear), inner ear conditions, stability and reproducibility of the stimulus, type of probe and environmental noise. A better understanding of the middle and inner ear interferences will help us to reach more specific DPOAE responses of the cochlea, leading to an exam able to detect mild alterations of the outer hair cells. This study aims to compare the slope and threshold of the DPOAE growth function and DPOAE amplitude; and the middle ear function (tympanogram probe of 1000Hz) and the DPOAE response. One hundred individuals will be evaluated, being 50 men and 50 women. Will be excluded individuals with middle ear pathologies or alterations, hearing thresholds higher than 20dBHL, alcoholic or drugs users, pigment disorders and persistent use of salycilate. (AU)
