Abstract

Scintillators materials are compounds that can efficiently convert high-energy photons, as X-ray or ³-ray (or any kind of ionizing radiations), in UV and visible radiations. The Eu3+, Tb3+ and Pr3+-doped GdAlO3 and LuAlO3 are promising scintillators materials. Moreover, a mixed host (Gd,Lu)AlO3 is of interest because it combines density and x-ray absorptivity properties of Lu3+ with energy transfer capacity from Gd3+ to activators, resulting in more efficient scintillators. The aim of this project is the preparation of Eu3+, Tb3+ and Pr3+-doped GdAlO3, LuAlO3 and (Gd,Lu)AlO3 scintillators materials by polymeric precursors method (Pechini method) and the study of its structural and spectroscopic properties with the firing temperature, Gd:Lu proportion, dopant amount and sample conformation (powder or films). Furthermore, it will be carried out a systematic study of the spectroscopic parameters under x-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), for the determination of scintillation efficiency parameters, radiation damage (formation of defects and its influence in the scintillation process) and the temperature dependence of luminescence and scintillation. XEOL measurements are important tools in the characterization and understanding of energy transfer and luminescence mechanism, likewise the acquisition of information about quantum confinement, electronic defects, and determination of local structure of activators in luminescent materials.
