Abstract

The Brazilian activities at Antarctica take place a fundamental role to maintain the scientific Brazilian independency and, in this case, Brazil can participate in the international decisions about Antarctica. The goal of this scientific project is to study soils and plants from Antarctica using spectrometric techniques (TS-FF-AAS, FAAS, GFAAS) according to the required detection of limits. The total and bioavailable Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb concentrations will be determined in soils samples from impacted areas (areas near the Brazilian, Chilean, Chinese, Russian and Uruguayan scientific stations) and regions with low human activities. In this case, the effects of human will be evaluated. Vegetable material will be also analyzed (moss and lichens). X-Ray fluorescence with Synchrotron Radiation will used to verify qualitative differences among the areas. The preliminary results were successfully obtained and gave important information about the further experiments. With the results of this project several contributions can be obtained in order to draw an environmental panorama of the Antarctica. (AU)
