Abstract

This research Project aims to intoduce the student Larissa Veiga to advanced experimental techniques using x-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. The object of study will be new intermetallic clathrates compounds which have a potential application in the field of thermoelectric materials. The samples to be studied will be the intermetallic compounds Ba8Ga16Sn30 and Eu8Ga16Ge30 in the beta phase available through a collaboration with researches from the Optical and Magnetic Properties of Solids Group from the IFGW. The project concerns crystallographic measurements at low temperatures (below 10 K) as well as magnetic x-ray scattering at the LNLS in the magnetic compounds containing Eu. A feasibility study of performing time resolved x-ray diffraction on these compounds will also be performed to obtain dynamical informations on the rattling of the Ba and Eu atoms in the beta phase of these compounds.
