The influence of total and REM sleep deprivation on free recall of word in healthy young subjects

Abstract

Rationale: one of the most commonly used tests to access the formation of new episodic memories after sleep deprivation is "free recall of word lists". However, it is unclear how words are processed in working memory, which is important to insure the formation of new long term memories. The assessment of the pattern of recall of word lists immediately after presentation of stimuli considering serial positions in word lists enables the investigation of this processing. Objective: to study the influence of sleep deprivation and one night of rebound on immediate free recall of word lists considering serial positions of words at encoding. Method: subjects will be 30 healthy young males divided into three groups of equal number of individuals: total sleep deprivation and selective deprivation of paradoxical sleep for 48 h, and controls (with no deprivation). Volunteers will be submitted to four sessions of free recall of word lists during 4 consecutive days (5 lists per session): baseline and 3 other sessions on the following days, the last corresponding to a post sleep-rebound evaluation in the sleep deprived groups. Free recall will be analyzed according to serial position at encoding, allowing the investigation of sleep deprivation effects on the types of memory involved in primacy and recency effects during 48 hours of deprivation and after one night of rebound sleep.
