Abstract

For more than a century, the properties and the methods for the obtainment of luminescent materials (phosphors) have been widely explored themes in the Inorganic Chemistry and in the Materials Science. Nowadays, due to their immense academic, technologic and economic importance, these studies receive a unique attention from the researchers of many fields. Surely, the most important group of elements with regard to the study of phosphors comprises the Rare Earths (RE), elements with atomic number between 57 (lanthanum) and 71 (lutetium), besides scandium (Z=21) and yttrium (Z=29). By presenting singular spectroscopic properties, these elements can form luminescent compounds with various applications. In this sense, some Rare Earth oxosalts, as phosphates (REPO4), borates (REBO3), phosphovanadates (RE(P,V)O4), and phosphoniobates (RE(P,Nb)O4), are often studied as hosts form lanthanide ions and, due to many of their physico-chemical properties, they are potential phosphors for new generation luminescent devices (which use excitation on vacuum ultraviolet - VUV -, below 200 nm). In this way, this work aims at developing alternative synthetic routes for Rare Earth oxosalts of many compositions and at evaluating their applicability as red, green or blue phosphors for VUV systems. By applying liquid phase methods (which enable the development of bottom-up approaches for the synthesis of nanomaterials), this work will seek for the control of the morphological, structural and compositional properties of the compounds, monitoring the influence of these factors on their luminescent behaviour.
