Abstract This project continues the process 2007/05914-0. The objective of the project is to determine the effect of different chemical structures and/or monomers on the self-assembly of the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium using different copolymers: P(SS-Ma), the poly(4-styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid), and P(MA-MAEO), the poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethoxylated methacrylate). P(SS-Ma) was chosen because the presence of acid groups with different pKa values in the anionic copolymer allowed the preparation of complex salts with a variable fraction of anionic groups neutralized by cationic surfactant in the copolymer, via controlled titration with hexadecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide, C16TAOH. Complex salts prepared from other random copolymers of P(MA-MAEO) family will ve used to investigate the effect of ethylene oxide side chains (with different lengths and in different proportions) along the anionic main chain on the hydrophilicity of the complex salt and on the structures formed.
