Abstract

Environmental factors and occlusal changes may compromise the functioning of biological structures, modifying the behavior of the masticatory muscles and affecting the welfare and quality of life of the individual. The objective of this research will be to evaluate the electromyographic activity of masseter and temporal muscles, to quantify the levels of salivary cortisol, the presence of oral dysfunction and analyze the quality of life and oral health among patients with malocclusions and a control group, aged 18 to 25 years. The Nordic Orofacial Test - Screening (NOT-S) and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) questionnaires will be used to assess the presence of oral dysfunction and quality of life related to oral health, respectively. Will be held the collection of the electromyographic activity of masseter and temporal muscles during rest and 100% of maximum intercuspation (maximum muscle contraction). The salivary cortisol will be collected by means of coated polypropylene tubes in a home after instructions to participants. The data will be analyzed by descriptive statistics. Parametric and non parametric tests will be applied, according to data distribution, consisting of tests of comparison, correlation and regression models adjusted, addition to specific tests for validation of the NOT-S in the English language, such as Kendall-tau correlation coefficient and Cronbach's ±.
