On "carrinho" by city: the practice of street skateboarding in São Paulo

Abstract

To provide an alternative and encourage the practice of the skateboard (or "carrinho", as named in the intimate skateboarders) who is not in the streets, the government seeks to build skateparks especially in regions further away from the downtown. However, for most that try these steps, what you see now is that the streets remain the scene of meetings and exercises. To encourage the practice of local skateboard in "appropriate" and ease the dispute by urban equipment, the government has made some actions, such as the Circuito Sampa Skate, sponsored by the Secretariat of Sports of the Municipality of São Paulo. This research project aims to examine the multiple meanings assigned to skateboard in Circuito Sampa Skate, by a commitment made in the networks of sociability by skateboarders, which unfold throughout the steps carried out in various parts of the city. At each stage, at the same time it can familiarize the skateboarder with his own group, brings you a new strangeness, to rediscover new territories, to place itself in new contexts, participating in the interactions which approximate or distance them from other people. Thus, it has a chance to capture the narratives about the natives of what is being a "skateboarder" and relations with other actors inside or outside their championships. With participant observation, we understand the diversity that makes up this particular universe - the skateboard - and bring as a consequence, a reflection of the city, concomitant to the theories discussed by Urban Anthropology.
