Abstract

Spittlebugs are insects of Cercopidae family that causes damages in pastures leading to reductions on the productivity of animal production systems. These injuries have been described mainly for the adult form of the insect and more commonly in the temperate grass species. The characterization of the damage caused by different forms of the insect is one of the most important aspects in the establishment of control strategies. Based on this information, this study aims to characterize and quantify the damages caused by two spittlebugs species in different infestation levels on Brachiaria brizantha cv . Marandu plants under two cutting heights. The test will be conducted in a greenhouse situated at the Biological Sciences Department of Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" - ESALQ/USP. Treatments consist of four insect infestation levels (0, 15, 30 and 60 nymphs per pot), two spittlebugs species (Mahanarva fimbriolata and Deois flavopicta) and two cutting heights (15 and 25 cm). The experimental design is randomized complete blocks with treatments arranged in a factorial 4 x 2 x 2 and 5 replicates. As two samples will be taken in time (end of the nymphal period and end of the adult life period) the experiment will have 160 experimental units (5 blocks x 16 treatments per block x 2 samples in time). Response variables will be: shoot accumulation, plant height, tillering, root production, nutritive value of forage and level of reserve compounds.
