Abstract

The cytopathology is characterized by the study of the cells and its alterations caused for illnesses, configuring itself as one of the most important disgnostic resources in the medical practice. Today, the main method used in the cytopathology diagnosis of microscopical images, gotten through samples in conventional examinations, is the pathologist visual evaluation, which is based on his experience. The use of computational techniques of image processing makes possible the identification of structural elements and the determination of inherent characteristics for the study of cells structural organization and its pathological variations, which allows getting information about their functional state. The use of computational methods in diagnosis aims at the diminish of the pathologist subjectivity of the evaluation and the classification process. This approach is inserted in a new and emergent sub-area of Bioinformatics, the Bioimage-Informatics. The objective of this project is the implementation of a computational system to assist the diagnosis of cervical cancer, based on the application of techniques of image processing and pattern recognition. The study, the evaluation and the application of these techniques in digital images obtained from cervix cytopathological samples will allow the automatic identification of possible injuries caused by infections or cancer processes. This way, the tool will generate a second opinion, helping to increase the precision of the pathologist diagnosis.
